At Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, you can truly make a difference either by welcoming a new dog or cat into your home or by volunteering or donating!
About the Shelter
The Griffin Pond Animal Shelter has a long history and was first established as the Humane Society of Lackawanna County in 1938 with the mission of providing care and shelter to homeless, mistreated, and unwanted animals.
On a typical day, the shelter provides care for over 200 animals, providing everything from shelter and food to medicine and supplies. With the merits of never abandoning or turning any animal away in need of help, the shelter also takes care of sick, elderly, and injured animals. They believe in never giving up on an animal until it has been adopted and, as such, only use euthanasia for animals that are severely suffering mentally, physically, or emotionally or are a risk for other animals or humans. Additionally, the shelter isn’t affiliated with any other organizations and thrives thanks to private donations.
The Adoption Process
The adoption process mostly begins online either through their Facebook or website. After looking through their roster of adoptable animals, you fill out a short application, and once it has been completed and reviewed, the adoption department will contact you with additional steps. A couple of things to keep in mind is that if for any reason, your newly adopted pet isn’t working out for you, you are encouraged to return them to the shelter with all the necessary paperwork. Additionally, the shelter takes a strong stance against non-medical cosmetic alterations such as de-clawing, ear-cropping and tail-docking.
In addition to having a wide range of dogs and cats, the shelter also has rabbits, guinea pigs, rats/mice, hamsters, ferrets, and birds available for adoption. To further the scope of how they’re able to take care of animals, they also offer spaying and neutering of pets.
