Local Spotlight: Ronald McDonald House Scranton PA
The Ronald McDonald House was created back in 1974 to create a supportive environment for sick kids and families to seek treatment.
Here, their goal is: “Guiding us in our mission to ease the hardship of children’s illness on families through programs that directly improve the health and wellbeing of children are our Core Values: Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence (I-CARE).”
How They Help
In order for patients to feel as comfortable as possible, The Ronald McDonald House provides a home away from home. There are private bedrooms for families of up to four, which include Tempur-Pedic roll out beds and private bathrooms.
In the Family Areas, you’ll find furnished living rooms with comfortable furniture and large flat screen televisions. There’s also wireless internet access and available guest computers.
Home-cooked meals are also provided, or you have the option to prepare your own meals in your own private kitchen.
When you’re running low on laundry, there’s an available fully stocked laundry room for you to take advantage of.
Ultimately, their goal is to make you feel like you’re living your regular life, despite the circumstances.
Events
In order to provide their patients with these accommodations free of charge, The Ronald McDonald House hosts a variety of events and fundraisers throughout the year.
Every summer, the annual Apple Orchard 5K Race and Fun Walk brings the community together for a race, a cookout, and celebration. Kids will be able to ride the Country Carousel, play in Jenn’s Giant Corn Box, and jump on the Pumpkin Bounce.
The Gourmet Gala presented by Hallmark brings together the culinary excellence of the entire region, where chefs can showcase their finest creations based on the year’s theme. Over 1,000 people attend every year, and everyone will be able to enjoy a night of socializing, tasting, mingling, and dancing.
Volunteer and Donate
There are a few ways everyone can help out, whether that’s a simple one-time donation or volunteering. The organization is always searching for people to help with fundraising events, provide meals, and even help out with gardening.
