The Jeep Wrangler is right at home off-road. It comes standard with a 4-wheel drive system, so you’ll always be ready for an adventure. The Toyota Tacoma, on the other hand, comes standard with 2-wheel drive and only offers 4-wheel drive with an upgrade.

You’ll even have your choice of three different 4x4 systems with the Jeep Wrangler. They include:

• Full-Time Selec-Trac® 4×4 System: This system automatically toggles between 2-wheel drive on clear roads and 4-wheel drive when you need it.
• Command-Trac® 4×4 System: This is ideal for low-range rock crawling and flat towing.
• Rock-Trac® 4×4 System: This system is ready to be your partner during your most daring adventures. It has a 4:1 low-gear ratio that provides more low-end torque so you can bowl over the greatest obstacles.

The Tacoma is only available with one part-time 4-wheel drive system.

When you’re tackling the unruliest surfaces such as deep mud, sand, or snow, locking differentials keep your wheels spinning with equal torque so you can dig yourself out of sticky situations. The Tacoma is only available with an electronically locking rear differential, while the Jeep Wrangler offers Tru-Lok® Electronic Locking Differentials in both the front and the rear.

You’ll get the power of choice with either model. Both models offer several engines, so you can decide which combination of power and efficiency is right for you. The Wrangler is available with the following powertrains:

• 3.6L Pentastar® V6 engine: 285 horsepower/260 lb-ft of torque
• 2.0L Turbo: 270 horsepower /295 lb-ft of torque
• 3.0L EcoDiesel: 260 horsepower/442 lb-ft of torque
• PHEV with 2.0L I4 Turbo: 375 horsepower/470 lb-ft of torque

Over in the Toyota Tacoma, you’ll have three engines to choose from. Plus, its most powerful option is only capable of 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. You’ll also only have diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrain options with the Wrangler.

The last engine available with the Jeep Wrangler is a 6.4L HEMI® V8. It only comes with the Rubicon 392. It generates 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque to match. It can also accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH in a trail-ripping 4.5 seconds.

If you want to get a little closer to nature out on the trails, the Toyota Tacoma has a power moonroof that’s perfect for letting in more light and some fresh air. The Wrangler, however, takes things to a whole other level.

The Wrangler is available with removable doors and a removable roof as well as a fold-down windshield. Getting closer to nature is fine. In a Wrangler, however, you’ll be able to become one with it!

Do you prefer to explore the farthest reaches of the wilderness? If so, only the Jeep Wrangler is available with the Xtreme Recon Package. It includes huge, 35-inch tires as well as an approach angle of 47.4 degrees. The similarly designed Tacoma TRD Pro only comes with 30.6-inch tires and an approach angle of 36.4 degrees.
